On Thursday morning, the Lone Star Conference Office released its awards for its outdoor track & field championship meet. Eastern New Mexico University had one of its best showings during its NCAA era, with 10 All-LSC honorees from the men’s team and five from the women’s team.
In addition to the All-LSC athletes, the Greyhounds not only captured Outstanding Male Track Athlete (Cap Shelton Award) and Outstanding Female Track Athlete (Wes Kittley Award). The selections marked the first LSC special award for ENMU. Marcus Parker was selected for the Cap Shelton Award after he posted first-place finishes in the 4x100m relay, 100m dash, and 200m dash. Melina Gryschka earned the Wes Kittley Award with victories in the 3,000m steeplechase, 1,500m run, and 5,000m run.
All-LSC honors are given to athletes with a first, second, or third-place finish at the championship meet. The NCAA will announce the qualifiers for the 2017 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, next Tuesday. The event will be held in Bradenton, Fla.
The men’s team had six first team All-LSC honorees, led by their 4x100m relay team of Jacques Hall, Avery Rasher, Parker, and Julian Coronado. The quartet not only posted the best time of the meet, but the top time in the country in the event. Omer Almog also won the 1,500m run, while Kenneth Lloyd won the high jump. Parker also earned first team for his wins in the 100m and 200m dashes.
For the women’s team, Gryschka earned first team honors for her three first place finishes. Alexis Aguirre turned in a first place performance in the javelin toss.
Coronado also garnered second team All-LSC honors for his performance in the 100m dash. Augustus Swanson was also honored as the runner up in the 400m hurdles. Mason Swanson from the women’s team garnered second team honors from her second-place performance in the 800m run.
Almog also received third team honors for his finish in the 5,000m hurdles, while Ilia Eligulachvili picked up third team after his performance in the 400m hurdles. Coley Norcross and Shelby Jones from the women’s team earned Third Team All-LSC honors for the 10,000m run and javelin toss, respectively.
