PORTALES, NM — After long practices and a lot of preparation, the Eastern New Mexico University football team will kick off the 2017 season on Thursday night at Al Whitehead Field at Greyhound Stadium. Eastern will open with a rematch of last year’s opening game against Southwest Baptist, the 18th-ranked team in the American Football Coaches Association preseason poll. This week’s contest is sponsored by C&S Incorporated.
Before the Game
Fans will have their opportunity to extend their support to the team during the traditional Dawg Walk, which is scheduled to begin at 5:35 p.m. MT. The Hounds will exit their field house on the side facing the practice field and proceed down the road towards the tailgating. Please gather by the grass areas on the home side. The team will greet the fans before heading back to the Dawg Walk sidewalk. There will be giveaways along the path that the football team will walk so don’t miss out on free stuff and a brand new tradition to support the Greyhound Football Team!

2016 Statistics
The Eastern New Mexico University football team will be opening the 2017 season at home against Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. This season’s opener marks the second consecutive year in which the programs will open against each other Overall, the Greyhounds are 38-38 in season openers, and have won 11 of their last 19.
In the 38 seasons they won their opening contest, the Greyhounds have posted 27 winning seasons, nine losing seasons, and a pair of .500 seasons. In contrast, when the Greyhounds dropped their season opener, they have had 25 losing seasons, 10 winning seasons, and three .500 seasons. ENMU has earned a tie in its opener three times, with one winning season and two losing seasons following. Despite last seasons’ loss, Eastern won seven games and advanced to the postseason for the second straight year.
In the Series
The Greyhounds are 0-1 against Southwest Baptist. Last season, Kamal Cass and D’Maujeric Tucker combined for 296 of Eastern’s 444 rushing yards against the Bearcats, but SBU held on for a 49-35 victory at Plaster Stadium. Eastern outscored the Bearcats 14-7 in the final quarter on a 28-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Johnson and a 20-yard sprint from Cass.
Both teams went on to post winning seasons and reached the postseason. Southwest Baptist finished 10-2, and dropped a 63-35 decision at Colorado-Mines in the opening round of the NCAA playoffs.

2016 Statistics
Last season Southwest Baptist posted a 10-2 record and reached the NCAA Tournament. They dropped a 63-35 decision to Colorado School of Mines to snap their five-game win streak. For the season, the Bearcats averaged an impressive 42.1 points per game. Their only other loss came at the hands of Truman.
