 The Eastern New Mexico baseball team battled Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday evening. The Greyhounds were handed a tough 5-4 loss in extra innings.

The Javelinas jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI double from Giancarlo Servin.

In the top of the fourth, Braeton Matthews got things started with a single to center field before stealing second and heading to third on a fielder’s choice from Rio Granger. B. Matthews crossed home plate on wild pitch to tie the game, 1-1.

The Greyhounds took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. Nicholas Tamez got on base with a walk and then Nick Schifftner singled up the middle to put two runners on for Andres Quintana. Quintana hit a double to right to send both runners home and give his team the advantage.

Texas A&M-Kingsville responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs to tie the game at 3-3 after taking advantage of several walks and wild pitches.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, B. Matthews made it on base after a Javelina error. He quickly stole second and then rounded home on an RBI single from Cole Luedeking to give the Hounds a slim 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Javelinas were looking to rally and managed to get the tying run in scoring position after Garrett Thompson singled and stole second. A single up the middle from Will Arnold sent Thompson home to even out the score at 4-4 and send the game into extra innings.

Texas A&M-Kingsville managed to tally the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on an RBI single from Arnold to secure the 5-4 victory.

Offensively, Quintana led the way for Eastern as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Schifftner and Luedeking also contributed two hits throughout the contest.

Fernando Burgos got the start on the mound for the Hounds. He allowed six hits, three runs, and three walks with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Cooper Hamilton came in for the remainder of the contest and was credited with the loss. He allowed just four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three batters.

Eastern and Texas A&M-Kingsville meet again tomorrow (4/30) at Nolan Ryan Field for a 5 p.m. contest.
