The Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball team fell, 85-66, to St. Edward’s University on Saturday afternoon in Greyhound Arena.
Eastern took an early 6-2 lead in the first five minutes of play with all six points coming from Yosnier Cobas.
The Hilltoppers responded with three straight three-pointers which contributed to a 17-0 run (15:14-12:02) to gain the advantage.
Throughout the remainder of the half, St. Edward’s saw strong shooting from beyond the arc which helped the Hilltoppers to a 42-24 lead at the end of the frame. In total, SEU hit 11 three-pointers in the first half.
St. Edward’s continued to stretch its advantage in the second half, leading by as many as 31 points midway through the frame.
Eastern kept battling as time wound down to chip away at that lead, but ultimately the Hilltoppers came away with the 85-66 victory.
NOTABLE STATS
- Cobas led all scorers with a career-high 25 points (11-15 FG, 1-1 3PT, 2-2 FT). He also pulled down five rebounds to go with a block and a steal.
- Jared Perry netted a career-high 12 points, while Adam Hess was close behind with 11 points.
- Hess paced the team in rebounds with nine and Perry added eight boards.
- For the Hilltoppers, Uche Dibiamaka netted 22 points. Joining him in double-digit scoring were Bennett Mohn and Daniel Venzant with 17 points each and Mason Hix with 15.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Eastern shifts to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
- St. Edward’s improves to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the LSC.
- The Hilltoppers lead the overall series, 5-2, with victories in the last five meetings.
- The Greyhounds are back in action on Thursday, January 27 when they head to UT Permian Basin for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
