The Eastern New Mexico baseball team opened the 2021 season with a doubleheader at St. Edward’s University on Friday. The Greyhounds fell 15-4 in the first game and 12-1 in the second.
GAME ONE: ST. EDWARD’S 15, ENMU 4
The Hilltoppers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Chase Cos got things started with a double down the left field line. Cos advanced to third on a sacrifice fly before rounding home on a double from Zarian Forde. St. Edward’s extended that lead by scoring nine runs in the third before adding one more run in the fourth.
The Greyhounds responded in the top of the fifth with two runs of their own, highlighted by singles from both Daniel Hunt and Trevor Moses to cut the deficit to 10-2.
The Hilltoppers had another productive inning in the sixth when they tallied five more runs.
Eastern got the bats going in the top of the seventh with a single from James Romero. After two consecutive batters were hit by pitches to load the bases, Andres Quintana singled up the middle to send two runners home. This late offensive push came up short however, as the Hounds fell by a final score of 15-4.
St. Edward’s Blake Holub earned the win on the mound, while James Puga was credited with the loss for the Greyhounds.
Leading the way offensively for Eastern New Mexico was Hunt, who finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with two singles and two runs scored.
GAME TWO: ST. EDWARD’S 12, ENMU 1
In the second game of the day, the Hilltoppers once again jumped out to an early lead as they went up 7-0 through four innings.
In the top of the fifth, Matthew Kory started things off with a double to right field before advancing to third on an error. Kory rounded home on a single from Camden Matthews to make the score 7-1.
St. Edward’s continued to widen the gap with a two-run homer from Morgan Allen in the fifth inning and three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Hilltoppers shut down the Greyhound bats in the seventh to secure the 12-1 victory.
Jason Vasil was credited with the loss for Eastern. Picking up the win for St. Edward’s was Jack Granack. Also spending time on the mound for the Greyhounds were Liam Sabiston, Alex Kuhn, and Romero.
Offensively, Hunt, Kory, Matthews, and Nicholas Tamez all had one hit for Eastern New Mexico.
The Hounds are back in action for a rematch with St. Edward’s tomorrow, Feb. 6. with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
