The Eastern New Mexico softball team wrapped up their 2019 home schedule this afternoon with a 13-0 and 4-0 loss to #22 Tarleton State.
The Greyhounds celebrated five seniors that continually made contributions to the softball program throughout their careers in Kimberly Herron, Karina Moreno, Emma and Hanna Garry and Lauren Likes. On the field Eastern struggled to generate an offensive attack all afternoon, failing to put a run on the board despite competing hard at the plate.
Eastern New Mexico also recognized all female student-athletes throughout the Eastern athletic department for winning the 2017-18 LSC Academic Excellence Award in a ceremony that was held in between games.
Tarleton State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their first trip to the plate in game number one and then tacked on one more run before a huge top half of the fifth inning in which they totaled nine runs in the frame and enacted the run-rule and finished the game after just five innings. Senior Hanna Gary made her final start at Greyhound Field and threw all five innings while surrendering just three earned runs despite the TexAnns totaling 13 runs in the game.
Sophomore Jennifer McElroy singled in the bottom of the first inning for just one of two Greyhound hits for the game in the first half of the doubleheader. Senior Kimberly Herron came on to pinch hit in the bottom of the fifth inning and singled through the left side for the second hit of the game.
The Greyhound offense found a spark in game number two and totaled seven hits for the game, matching the total for the TexAnns. Sophomore Kayla Marshall went 2-for-4 while five other Greyhounds recorded a hit in the game.
Herron made her final home start in game number two and went all seven innings while surrendering four earned runs on seven hits.
Eastern New Mexico will close out the 2019 regular season next weekend on the road against MSU Texas.
