PORTALES, N.M. – Facing its second consecutive ranked opponent in a four-game series, the Eastern New Mexico ball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 3 Angelo State 15-2 and 11-1 at home on Friday afternoon.
In the opening game, the Lone Star Conference leading Rams (32-7, 12-2 LSC) were able to push across the first run of the game in the top of the first, but Eastern responded in their half of the frame. Starting second baseman Nicholas Ankerman led off the inning with a triple to the right center field gap and came across on Paul Tapia RBI sacrifice fly to right to notch to draw the game at 1-1.
The Greyhounds couldn’t contain the Rams in the second inning as Angelo State put up nine runs in the frame to reclaim a 10-1 edge.
The Hounds got a run back in the second an Ankerman bases loaded walk, but Eastern could climb no closer.
The Rams scored their 15 runs on 15 hits and committed one error while Eastern’s two runs were scored on five hits with one error.
Ankerman led the Eastern bats after slashing 2-for-5 from the plate with an RBI and a run.
In the second game of the day, the second inning was once again a tough one for the Greyhounds as the Rams scored six of their 11 runs in the inning on five hits and two errors to hold an early 6-0 advantage.
The Hounds were able to push a run across in the fourth inning, but the Rams notched five unanswered to close out the contest.
Angelo State’s 11 runs came off of 13 hits and committed one error while Eastern scored its run on seven hits and made three errors.
Ryan Anderson and Tapia led the ENMU bats with two hits apiece, as Anderson went 2-for-3 from the plate while Tapia slashed 2-for-4. First baseman Tristan Bowden scored Eastern’s lone run after going 1-for-3.
In his second start, Ethan Coombes went five innings and gave up seven runs, just one earned on 10 hits, a walk, and three strikeouts.
Due to inclement weather forecasted tomorrow, the Hounds will have a day off before returning to the field on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Rams.
