DENTON, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico softball team took on Texas Woman’s University for a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds (0-19, 0-18 LSC) fell 8-0 in the first contest and 4-3 in the second.
GAME ONE: TWU 8, ENMU 0 (5 INNINGS)
The Pioneers (6-21, 5-17 LSC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after taking advantage of several walks, a wild pitch, and a hit by pitch.
Texas Woman’s added three more runs in the next frame, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Alexys Ginegaw.
In the fourth inning, the Pioneers saw two runs cross home plate and then shut down the Greyhound offense in the next at bat to secure the 8-0 five-inning victory.
Eastern saw two hits during the contest, a single to left center from Bella Mendoza and a well-placed bunt from Aylene Lucero.
Azalea Martinez got the start in the circle for the Hounds. She allowed seven hits and six walks while striking out two batters in three innings of work. Brook Leger finished out the contest with one hit allowed and one strikeout.
GAME TWO: TWU 4, ENMU 3
Texas Woman’s once again took an early advantage, going up 3-0 through three innings.
Eastern continued to battle throughout, cutting the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth frame. Mikenzey Patterson got on base with a single to right field before heading to second on a single from Maite Bustillos. Lucero walked to load the bases. Jokaira Paredes hit a sacrifice fly to send Patterson home.
The Pioneers managed to score one more run in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead out to 4-1.
In the top of the seventh, the Greyhounds attempted to rally and saw two runs score on two hits and three TWU errors. Bustillos and Lucero had the hits while Paredes and Mendoza each had a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, the Hounds fell just short as Texas Woman’s closed out the game and held on to the close 4-3 win.
Offensively, Eastern saw eight hits from five different student-athletes. Bustillos, Lucero, and Martinez all had two hits.
Leger got the start and the loss with four hits and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Jordan Bowman finished out the game and had one strikeout while allowing three hits and one run.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Sunday, April 18 when they travel to Midwestern State for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
