ODESSA, TEXAS – The Eastern New Mexico baseball team was edged, 14-12, by the University of Texas Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after a grand slam from Joe Allen IV, but the Greyhounds responded in their next at bat to cut the deficit to 4-2.

UT Permian Basin added two more runs in the bottom of the third to stretch the advantage back out to four runs.

The Eastern offense had a huge fourth inning, scoring seven runs to gain a 9-6 lead. The Hounds saw singles from six different student-athletes to go with doubles from Matthew Kory and Jack Thompson.

Both teams continued to battle but Eastern New Mexico held an 11-8 lead midway through the sixth inning.

However, the Falcons would not go down without a fight as they managed to tally four runs to take a slight 12-11 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Texas Permian Basin’s Nick Hernandez then hit a two-run homer to give his team a 14-11 lead in the eighth inning.

The Hounds attempted a late rally in their last at bat. Daniel Hunt got things started with a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a single from Nicholas Tamez before scoring after a two-out hit up the middle from Nick Schifftner to bring Eastern within two. The Falcons hung on to get the last out and secure the 14-12 victory.

Offensively, the Greyhounds saw 17 hits from nine student-athletes throughout the contest. Seven of Eastern’s players recorded two or more hits. Cole Luedeking led the way with three hits, while Kory and Thompson paced the team with two RBI each.

Four different pitchers saw action for Eastern New Mexico. Shaun Watson was credited with the loss while UT Permian Basin’s Jonathon Rice earned the win.

The Greyhounds and Falcons meet once again for a doubleheader on Sunday at Momentum Bank Ballpark in Midland, Texas. The first game will be a nine-inning conference contest starting at 12 p.m. followed by a seven-inning non-conference matchup.
