The Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball team picked up an 85-72 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State University Monday night in Greyhound Arena.
Both teams came into the game ready to battle which was evident with three ties in the first seven minutes of play. The Greyhounds went on a 7-2 run (10:50-9:50) to open up an eight-point lead, which was the largest of the game to that point.
However, the Aggies clawed their way back to tie the game at 27-27 with 8:22 left on the clock. The teams then traded baskets which made for two more ties before Oklahoma Panhandle went on a 9-0 run (6:16-4:05) to take the 40-31 advantage.
Eastern responded with six unanswered points to finish out the half and cut the deficit to 40-37.
The Aggies opened up the second half with an 11-4 run (19:45-15:40) to stretch their lead out to 10 points.
ENMU continued to chip away at that lead until they eventually tied the game at 63-63 on a three-pointer from James Jordan. The Aggies stayed in the game though and saw one more tie at 68-68 after a three from Auston Chatman.
A layup from Cornell Greenwood gave the Hounds the lead with 4:36 remaining in the game and they never looked back as they cruised the rest of the way to the 85-72 win.
NOTABLE STATS
- Greenwood (7-9 FG, 2-3 3PT, 2-2 FT) and Jose Serrano (6-8 FG, 6-6 FT) paced the Eastern offense with 18 points each. Adam Hess (5-10 FG, 2-5 3PT, 2-2 FT) added 14 points, while Yosnier Cobas (3-3 FG, 1-1 3PT, 5-6 FT) finished the game with 12.
- On the glass, Serrano led the way with six rebounds. Kentrell Pullian and Marvin Mapaga each pulled down four rebounds.
- Jordan had a team-high three steals.
- Serrano, Cobas, and Mapaga each recorded one block during the contest.
- The Hounds finished shooting 57.7 percent from the floor, 47.1 percent from beyond the arc, and 81.0 percent at the charity stripe.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Greyhounds improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Aggies are 3-3.
- Eastern has now won the last two meetings in a row between the two programs.
- ENMU heads to the Pak-A-Sak WT Thanksgiving Classic hosted by West Texas A&M on November 26-27. The Hounds take on Southwestern Oklahoma State University at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday against Oklahoma Baptist University.
