PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico volleyball continued their winning ways, with a 3-0 sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville University on Saturday at Greyhound Arena. ENMU push its record to 6-15 overall, with a conference record of 6-7, the Javelinas fall to 12-7 on the season, with a 6-7 standing in conference play.
Both teams were very back and forth with each other in the opening frame. The first set featured five lead changes and 15 tie scores as each team traded points. With the score at 22 points each, Eastern broke the back and forth going on a 4-2 run to take the first set, 25-23. Mikaela Garvin found a kill in the final points, along with Kali Nelson finding a kill.
Like the first set, the second set was tight between the two teams. With the score at 13-12 Javelinas, the Hounds found a large 9-1 stretch to establish a 19-13 lead. During the streak of points, Jordan O’Connor-Dempsey and Adriana Puni each found kills, then Gracelyn Stubbs combined Garvin for a block. Eastern held off a late TAMUK surge, taking the set 25-22.
The final set would be the closest out of the three. The decisive set saw 14 tie scores and six lead changes. With the Javelinas ahead, 24-22, the Hounds closed out the game with four straight points to win the set 26-24, and the match 3-0. With O’Connor-Dempsey at the service line, the middle blocker found a kill to keep the match alive. Then, Stubbs tied the set with a kill, setting up Jasmine Gannon to close out the set with the final two kills.
NOTABLE STATS
- ENMU held an advantage of 45 kills on the afternoon, over the 37 kills from TAMUK.
- Each team was close on digs, with the Hounds posting 65 digs, compared to the 63 digs of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
- Garvin led ENMU with 13 kills, with Stuubs and Gannon adding nine kills on the afternoon.
- Rae Sapiga led all competitors with 26 assists, along with Qitana Sapiga adding 11 assists.
- Daejia Rodriguez was the team leader in digs with 11.
- Stubbs posted five total blocks on the day with five.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Eastern are now on a five-game win streak, its longest of the season. This is the longest winning streak for the Hounds since 2016, when the Hounds held a six-game win streak.
- The Hounds have now beaten the Javelinas in three straight attempts, holding a series advantage of 42-28.
- Eastern will be on the road next, traveling to Lubbock, Texas to take on Lubbock Christian University, Friday, Nov. 6. First serve will be at 5:00 p.m.
