PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico track and field team is preparing for its final regular season meet of the 2019 season as the Hounds will compete at the West Texas A&M Last Chance on Sunday.
Four ENMU track standouts will compete in the meet as Kandice Miles, Maijah Mathis, Lateria Slaughter, and Danee Bustos will look to improve their chances of being selected to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held in Kingsville, Texas from May 23-25.
The four competitors are slated to compete in the 4×100-meter relay while Miles and Mathis will look to improve their times in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash.
An All-Lone Star Conference First Team selection, Miles enters the meet with the 21st-best time in NCAA Division II in the 100-meter with an 11.73 that was set at the WTAMU Invitational on April 20. Miles also currently holds the 10th-best time in the 200-meter, turning in a time of 23.87 to get the silver medal at the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 4.
Mathis will also be looking to compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter events at the NCAA Outdoor Championships as she will look to boost her top 20 individual marks in both events. Mathis holds the 18th-fastest 100-meter time in the nation with an 11.71 as well as the 18th-best 200-meter mark with a 24.07, both marks set at the WTAMU Invitational.
The women’s 4×100-meter relay team will look to improve upon an already phenomenal mark set at the LSC Outdoor Championships, as the squad came away with the bronze medal after crossing the finish line in an ENMU record time of 45.56, setting the seventh-fastest time in Division II
