PORTALES, NM —On Thursday afternoon, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will kick off its 14th season of play with a three-game road trip. The Hounds will look to build on a successful 2016 campaign which saw the program reach a conference tournament for the second time ever.

The season will open on Thursday, with a 3 p.m. (MT) contest at Adams State. On Saturday, the Hounds will visit Southern Nazarene with a 2 p.m. start.

2016 Statistics

Last year, Eastern posted a 7-8-4 record with a 5-6-3 mark in Heartland Conference play. The Hounds were tough at home with a 4-2-3 record and earn road wins over Oklahoma Christian and Lubbock Christian.

On the final day of the regular season, Eastern posted a 2-1 win over West Texas A&M to reach a conference tournament for the first time since the 2006 season.

Omary Shabani is Eastern’s top returning scorer with a pair of goals last season. He tallied the game-winner against Westminister.

Head Coach Paul Tate enters his third season and with a 13-16-6 record is just three wins away from catching Carlos Elizondo for the program record for victories.

2016 Statistics

The Grizzlies registered a 6-12 mark last year with a 3-6 home record. The team gave up just 2.38 goals per game and was led by Austin Baumeister’s 2.15 goals-against average.
The Greyhounds are 1-2 against Adams State as the teams split the last two meetings.
