ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball team officially opened the 2021-22 season with a close 96-92 loss to Fort Lewis College on Saturday afternoon at The Pit.

The contest was a battle from the beginning, with both teams trading baskets. The first half saw four ties before the Skyhawks took the lead with just over six minutes remaining. Fort Lewis went into the locker room at halftime with a 46-40 advantage.

In the second half, both teams continued to play hard although the Skyhawks held the advantage for most of the frame. Fort Lewis led by as many as nine points halfway through, but the Greyhound offense wouldn’t go down easily.

Eastern took a 79-78 lead on a three from Cornell Greenwood with 4:11 left in regulation. The Skyhawks responded by hitting a free throw and then a layup to gain the advantage back.

The game came down to the wire but ultimately Fort Lewis held on to secure the 96-92 win.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds saw five student-athletes score double digits. James Jordan led the Hounds with 18 points (8-14 FG, 0-3 3PT, 2-3 FT). Adam Hess added 13 points, while JaQuan Morris was close behind with 12. Jose Serranoand Kentrell Pullian added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
  • On the boards, Yosnier Cobas pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Pullian added seven rebounds.
  • Overall, both teams finished the game with 38 rebounds each.
  • The Skyhawks took advantage Eastern fouls throughout the contest as they hit 29 of 35 free throws.
  • For Fort Lewis, Riley Farris led all scorers with 31 points.


BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Greyhounds drop to 1-0 overall, while the Skyhawks start the season 1-0.
  • Eastern wraps up the RMAC/LSC Challenge with a 1 p.m. contest against New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday, November 14.
