Men’s Basketball
In total, 371 players competed at Eastern and hundreds more supported the teams from the stands.
Although they came to play basketball against other schools across Colorado, West Texas, and New Mexico, this also gave the athletes a unique experience by getting to see a college campus.
Some teams stayed on campus, allowing the high school students to learn about the university and expose them to Eastern New Mexico University.
“We are so thankful our coaches host these events bringing thousands of high school students and their families from all over the region into our Portales campus and community,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Paul Weir. “As there are scarce opportunities and resources at our institutional disposal, this fills an incredible void to improve enrollment.”
Another opportunity for high school age students to experience Portales in happening this Friday, July 15 at Greyhound Stadium.
ENMU football is set to host a 7-on-7 camp featuring 29 schools and 1,100 kids.
This experience will also bring in thousands to the region to learn about Eastern and compete at a collegiate stadium in front of Greyhound coaches and against other top talent in the area.
“We are so grateful to Eastern athletics for bringing all these people into our community,” said Portales mayor Ron Jackson. “They eat at our restaurants, stay in our hotels, and enjoy everything Portales has to offer. Way to go Greyhounds!”
Introducing a higher education experience to students pursuing further schooling is important, especially when it can be combined through sport. The camps hosted by men’s basketball and football help build our local community and encourage the future leaders of our country to aim for the top.
“We tip our caps to these coaches and programs for making this type of investment into the future of Eastern,” Dr. Weir said. “They definitely don’t have to do this, but they know our current challenges and are two-feet in wanting to make this a better place.”
