Greyhound Basketball Announces Signing of Nico Matheus
Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball head coach Tres Segler recently announced the signing of guard Nico Matheus out of Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas.
Matheus poses as the first high school signing of this year’s class for coach Segler, and will look to join current Greyhound Devin Pullum as another standout guard from the DFW metroplex this fall. The Eastern New Mexico basketball program has officially added seven new faces to the roster with the addition of Matheus, and will look to take advantage of the 6’4 guard’s natural shooting ability early in his career.
“We’re really excited to have Nico Matheus join the Greyhound Family,” coach Segler said, “Nico is a big, tough wing that can truly shoot the basketball from the perimeter at an elite level. We know that Nico has put in some incredible work over his high school career at Byron Nelson High School and we’re confident that he will make the transition to the Lone Star Conference very well.”
Matheus recently finished up his career at Byron Nelson High School with a First Team All-District 5-6A selection under the tutelage of head coach Scott Curran. Matheus led the Bobcats to a record of 23-11 his senior season and also served as a vital contributor on the summer AAU scene for Nike EAD under the direction of Dre Evans.
“Nico’s shooting ability landed him a spot on the First Team All-District list, and in Texas 6A Basketball that’s truly a huge accomplishment,” coach Segler said, “He has grown up playing against the toughest AAU and high school basketball talent in Texas, and we feel that he will be able to contribute to our program.”
Originally from Venezuela, Nico will add yet another piece of international flare to the 2019-20 roster as four different players with international roots have now signed on to become Greyhounds.
“Nico comes from Dallas, Texas, but his family is originally from Venezuela,” coach Segler said, “This makes him our second Venezuelan player in our signing class, and were excited for Jose Serrano and Nico to be able to be on the same team together.”
