Glenn McCoy has been a part of Meals on Wheels for as long as most people can remember. Every day he is at the meal pick up site helping volunteers make sure they have the correct set of meals and matching up delivery schedules. Always with a smile and a kind word. If there is a no-show from the volunteers more often than not, Glenn loads up the meals and takes off to do the deliveries.
In addition to his daily dedication to the meal pick up site duties, Glenn has served as Treasurer since 2005. Last year, Glenn began the process of training his replacement, Dr. Charles Brooks to take over as Treasurer. He will continue his daily duties for now as he says he has retired from many duties many times only to take on a new one!
I am amazed at his servant heart and tireless dedication to helping those in need. If you would like to help serve on Meals On Wheels, give us a call 575-607-5262 for more information.
- How long have you been associated with Meals on Wheels?
To the best of my memory, it was around 2005 when I started.
- What offices have you held on the Board?
To my memory, only that of being Treasurer. However, I have held other non-official position such as enrolling new clients, seeing that the delivery of meals is carried out smoothly and being a trouble-shooter between the kitchen and the person who deliver meals.
Gail Ferguson, who was a VP in a local bank. He invited me to join the Meals on Wheels board and very quickly began grooming me for the position of Treasurer Any success that I may have had is due to the good teaching of a predecessor.
4, Why do you serve on the Board?
Because I like to make the community where I live a better place to live. This is also why I have held offices of President/Treasurer
for the Portales Kiwanis Club, the Habitat for Humanity, the Roosevelt County American Heart Association and the Council of Professors Emeritus (ENMU). I also served on the City Planning and Zoning Commission and as Director of the now defunct Babe Ruth Baseball league for 9 years,
- What are your daily duties like?
This varies, of course, depending on what comes up that demands my attention. Like any business, we have to keep our finances up, have to deal with state and national regulations, we have to keep in good relations with our financial supporters, etc, Since we are a non-profit organization we are constantly faced with the challenge of keeping the coffer full.
- Why should people serve or donate to Meals on Wheels?
Number one, Meals on Wheels is dependent on volunteers to deliver the meals for us Monday through Friday, rain or shine, hot or cold.. We have to have financial support to “pay the bills,”insurance, meals, food containers, and other items that pop up. The rewards to the giver/driver comes when they see the smiles and hear the “thank you” that come from the elderly receiving meals from them. We delivered 5,114 meals during 2021, so lots of smiles and “thank you(s) ” were given and received.
7. What am I going to do with my free time?
I have already “retired” three or four times and I have always found something to do outside my home. I don’t think I will be disappointed by not finding something else to do for others. Anyway, I actually am only “retiring” from the position of Treasurer, not from the Meals on Wheels program. That will come later.
8, Tell a little bit about hobbies? How long have I lived in Portales? What did I do for a living?
At my age I have about “hobbied” out. My family and I enjoyed seeing other parts of the world so we traveled to the European countres, throughout the Middle East, from Greece to Israel to Egypt and through the Far East as far as China.
My family consisted of a wife Dorla, children Ann, Wes and Stan. We came to Portales in 1971, All three of our children graduated from Portales High School and two of them graduated from ENMU (one wandered away to Texas Tech!). While here I was a Campus Minister for my denomination and also taught in the Department of Religion, My wife worked in the Department of Education as a Teacher Certification Clerk.
Needless to say we have enjoyed our stay in Portales and owe a great deal to the people who live here.
Glenn has quietly served this community in many ways, both individually and as a member of several groups. He lives what he preaches. We can all be thankful for his presence in our lives.
