Obituary

There will be an informal gathering to celebrate the life of Glen Elbert Howl, 82, at the family home, 2100 W. University Dr. in Portales, beginning at 2:00 PM on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023.  Come and share memories and lend support to his family.  Those desiring to make memorial contributions may send them to either the Berniece A. Glen Elbert Howl was born June 12, 1941, in Portales, to the home of Zenobia “Pauline” (Fails) and Elbert Lee Howl, and passed from this life very suddenly on Aug. 21, 2023 in Amarillo, TX.  Glen played football in high school, and graduated from Portales High School in 1959.  During his first semester of college, he played football for the University of New Mexico.  After entering the New Mexico National Guard, he returned to Portales in 1961 to attend Eastern New Mexico University.  He soon met the love of his life, Miss Yvette Ann MeAmber, better known as “Candy.”  They were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Portales by Rev. Homer Akers on Aug. 24, 1962.  They graduated together with their Bachelor’s Degrees in 1965, and he began a long and distinguished career in education by teaching History and Social Studies along with coaching football and wrestling in Los Alamos, NM.  In 1971, Glen coached an All-Star Team in the North-South Football Game.  Then in 1972, he coached an undefeated football team to win the District Championship.  During the summers, Glen worked on his Master’s Degree, and completed it in 1970.  In 1979, he completed his Ed Spec. Degree.

In 1976, he moved his family to Raton, and in 1978, they moved back to Los Alamos for a year.  Glen became an administrator in the Lovington School District in 1980 as the Assistant Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer.   From 1993 until 2006, Glen served in various communities, mostly in Texas, where he served in a variety of administrative positions.  One of those was as Director of the Special Education Program for the Portales Schools from 1996 until 1998.  In 2006, Glen retired, and he and Candy moved back to Portales.

Glen was a member of the NEA, and at various times was active in Kiwanis Club, and the Elks Lodge.  He was an avid golfer, and member of the Portales Country Club.  Glen was a devoted husband, father and grandfather

He is survived by Candy, his wife of just a few days short of 61 years of the home; a son, David Howl and a daughter, Chelle Strawn and Dale Boland of Portales; two grandchildren, Justin Charles Strawn and wife, Kaylee, and Erica Strawn; three great-grandchildren, Weston Kade Strawn, Casen Cole Strawn and James Everhett Farslow; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bobby Crane of Portales; and a sister-in-law, Marcia (Mrs. Steve) Howl of Portales.  He was preceded in death by his parents “Eb” and Pauline Howl, and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Steve Howl and John and Nelda Howl.
