Memorial services for Ed Hiner, 75, of Portales, will be at 10:00 AM, Wed., Nov. 15, 2017 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Kenneth Smith officiating. Lonnie Berry, Winston Berry, Kenneth Smith, Bob Hubbard, Keith Kelt and John Gentry will serve as honorary pallbearers.
George Edwin Hiner, known to most everyone as Ed or Eddie, was born April 22, 1942 in Portales to the home of Veta Oleta (Bilberry) and Clifford Jesse Hiner and died at his home on Nov. 10, 2017. Ed grew up in Portales and attended the Portales schools. On Dec. 19, 1961 he was married to Judy Hill. They made their home back and forth between Portales and Tucumcari for several years before moving to Eunice in 1974. In 1986 they moved back to Tucumcari, and then about twenty years ago, Ed returned to Portales to make his home.
At one time he owned the Montgomery Ward Store on the square in Portales. For several years he ran a Tom’s Potato Chip route. While living in Tucumcari, he built and operated the E&J Cleaners. Ed began the TV Guide in both Portales and Tucumcari. Throughout Ed’s life, he was an entrepreneur, owning and investing in numerous business ventures. He had even earned his electrical contracting license. In these past years in Portales, Ed owned the Berkley Apartments, the Arizona Apartments, the Mize Apartments and the University Apartments. Ed always enjoyed electronics and gadgets.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Cliff and Catherine Hiner of Denver, CO; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Melanie and Craig Nelson of Eunice, Susan and Jon Nagel of Portales and Misty Hiner of Eunice; eight grandchildren, Megan (Ruben) Gastelum, Morgen (Ashlyn) Hiner, Manuel Sandoval, Sara Hiner, Emily Nagel, Grace Hiner, Rachel Nagel and Kaitlyn Gallant; two sisters, Linda (Jim) Martin of Allen, TX and Phyllis (Bruce) Hamm of Catskills, NY; two nieces and a nephew, Pam Zurian, Cindy (Brad) Browne and Jimmy (Teri) Martin. He was preceded in death by both of his parents
