The mornings are crisp and the evenings are cool, so that means it’s time for fall. I love my fall flowers! Mums, pansies, and kale are a colorful delight on my front porch. All the different textures are a visual kaleidoscope of my favorite season. This trio of plants work amazingly, as they can transform from fall to winter in a snap.

Kale and pansies are outstanding cold weather plants, and will continue to perform after winter sets in. Trim off any spent leaves to keep them looking fresh. The mums in the arrangement play double roles. In the fall they provide beautiful color and texture. After they go dormant and are trimmed down, they are a sort of “natural floral foam” to stick decorative twigs and pine greenery into. Some carefully placed pine cones and ornaments make your holiday porch beautiful all winter!

As you sip your coffee on your porch this early fall, keep the power trio of mums, kale, and pansies in mind for your pots. They will keep you smiling until spring!
