STEPHENVILLE, Texas – A pair of Eastern New Mexico volleyball standouts took home awards at the Lone Star Conference Volleyball Awards Banquet Wednesday night as sophomore outside hitter Jasmine Gannon was named to All-Lone Star Conference First Team while both Gannon and senior middle blocker Jennifer Martinez were named to the All-Academic Team.
Gannon led the Hounds offensive attack during the regular season, tallying a team-high 371 kills at a 3.28 kills per set clip while also scoring 407 points in 113 sets. Gannon’s 371 kills was the second-most of any player in the conference with only LSC Player of the Year Madison Brabham from Texas A&M-Commerce finishing with more.
With Gannon’s 407 points, it was just the fourth time in the last 12 seasons that a Greyhound volleyball player eclipsed the 400-point mark in a season. The only other players during that time span to accomplish that feat were All-American Lauren Frye, who scored 589 points in 2016 and 527 points in 2015 while Brookyn Biel tallied 424 points during the 2016 season.
Gannon scored a season-high 22.5 points off a season-best 21 kills in the Hounds season-opener against Emporia State on Aug. 24. The Clovis, N.M. native topped the 20-point mark on two other occasions during the season, most recently against Texas A&M-Commerce when she scored 21.5 points off 18 kills on Nov. 2 and 21 points off 19 kills in a Sept. 18 win over West Texas A&M.
On top of her accomplishments on the court, Gannon has also performed admirably in the classroom as well, earning her one of the 14 spots on the LSC All-Academic Team in her first year of eligibility for the list. Thus far in her tenure at Eastern New Mexico, Gannon has registered a 3.92 GPA while majoring in Mathematics for Secondary Education.
In her fourth year in the ENMU program, Martinez joined Gannon on the All-Academic Team after putting together her most successful season with the ENMU volleyball program. The Lynnwood, Wash. native earned her spot after posting a 3.94 GPA while pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and plans to attend law school after graduation. In her previous three years at ENMU, Martinez has been named to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll every year. Martinez leads this year’s squad with 78 total blocks and is currently second on the team with 284 points, 208 kills, and 26 service aces.
The Greyhounds will return to the court tomorrow night for the quarterfinal round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The eighth-seeded Hounds will face off against No. 1 seed Tarleton State at 6:30 p.m. in Stephenville, Texas.
