The Eastern New Mexico football program opened up Lone Star Conference play with a 36-10 loss to Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Saturday afternoon.
The Javelinas struck first with a field goal on their first drive but then ENMU’s Justin Manyweather responded with a 94-yard kickoff return to put the Greyhounds up 7-3.
Texas A&M-Kingsville wrapped up the first quarter with another field goal to bring the score within one point.
Cage Jones hit a 29-yard field goal in the beginning of the second frame to widen the lead back out to 10-7.
The Javelinas went on to score 30 unanswered points throughout the remainder of the game to secure the 36-10 victory.
NOTABLE STATS
- Manyweather’s 94-yard kickoff return is the first since 2014 when D’Maujeric Tucker had a 100-yard kickoff return against Tarleton State.
- Eastern forced two fumbles throughout the contest. Mazin Richards and Tafari Gomillion were each credited with a forced fumble.
- Beau Burns and Jahiree Pittman-Anderson paced the defense with 10 tackles each, while Cameron Santa Cruz was close behind with nine.
- Kendrick Milford and Richards were each credited with 1.5 sacks. Rapi Sotoa had 1.0 sack and both Burns and Camron Pitcher Jr. had 0.5 sacks.
- Martavius Dill led the offense in receiving yards with 20 on four receptions.
- Currie Thomason finished the afternoon with 58 rushing yards.
- Nathan Valencia was 10-25 passing for 66 total yards.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- During halftime of the game, ENMU recognized a group of alumni from the 1991 Lone Star Conference Championship football team. The 1991 Greyhound squad captured the program’s first outright LSC Championship.
- The Greyhounds hit the road for the first time this season next weekend. ENMU travels to Midwestern State University for a LSC matchup on Saturday, September 25 at 6 p.m.
- Eastern’s next home game will be Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, October 2 against Lincoln University (Calif.) at 6 p.m.
