Dear Heritage Days Fun Run/Walk volunteers: Thank you for for all your help with the 20th annual Heritage Days Fun Run/Walk! Today more than 100 athletes and volunteers enjoyed mild temperatures and just a 6 MPH wind as we resumed the event after its cancelation in 2020. See photos coming soon to the Portales Women’s Club Facebook page, and coverage in the Eastern New Mexico News on Wednesday, and KSEL Radio news on Monday. Lee Hurren was a masterful co-director, and without your help, this event could not have been as successful.
The men’s winner was Evan Carbajal, who covered the 2-mile course in 12:42. The women’s winner was Jeanel Fitzpatrick in 16:56. The event was sponsored by Eastern Family Dentistry, Portales Woman’s Club (PWC), and The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce. Primary volunteers were members of PWC led by Noelle Bartl, and the ENMU Cross-Country team coached by Jeff Kavalunas. Portales Police Officer Rowdy Smith and colleagues provided for the safety of participants.
Trophies were awarded to top finishers overall, and medals in four age-group categories.
Just before Kavalunas fired the gun, Dag Sewell gave the invocation and Landon Grawrock sang the “Star Spangled Banner.” Race directors were Jeff Gentry and Lee Hurren. Gentry said, “It’s wonderful to resume Heritage Days this year and put bodies in motion after a hard year.” Thanks again and keep on moving! Also note the Leap for Life run next weekend in Clovis.
