PORTALES, NM – June 15, 2021 – Former University of New Mexico Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dr. Paul Weir will be visiting ENMU-Portales on Wednesday, June 16, as the first candidate to be brought on campus for Eastern New Mexico University-Portales’ director of athletics search.
The campus and Portales community are invited to a “meet and greet” with Weir at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at the Courthouse Café, located at 109 S Main St.Then, at 9:30 a.m., Weir will be available to speak with campus and community members at ENMU-Portales in Greyhound Arena, Room 7.
During Weir’s tenure at UNM (2017–21), game attendance increased dramatically as he fielded several successful teams, including a third-place regular-season finish in 2017–18. He also guided the team to its first Mountain West Conference Tournament title game since 2014.
Prior to his stint at UNM, Weir coached at New Mexico State University, beginning as an assistant coach in 2007 and working his way up to becoming the head coach in 2016. In his first year as head coach, Weir lead the Aggies to a 28-6 record, winning the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Weir holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from NMSU and has taught at UNM’s Anderson School of Management.
