Floy “Sue” Darrene Slack was born to Leland W. “Tator” Garrett and Zela Mae (Eubanks) Garrett on April 24, 1938, in Dumont, TX and passed away on the morning of August 26, 2023 in Clovis, NM. Sue’s father worked on various farms and ranches throughout New Mexico and Texas. She loved ranch life, but was not so fond of farm life. If you talked to her in the last few years, she would always mention how she hated pulling cotton and broomcorn, and killing the snakes that were in the field. When she was a teenager, they moved to Floyd where she was chosen FFA Sweetheart, of which she was always very proud. Later, they moved to Portales. While living there, she met and married Birl Gray. After they divorced, she was married to Calvin Slack. Sue loved John Wayne movies and songs by Merle Haggard, and dancing.
Sue is survived by two sisters, Diane Ruther and Donna Kinkade both of Clovis; her daughters and sons-in-law, Tana and Jimmy Duncan of Causey and Rena and Rick Patton of Canyon, TX; two sons, Neil Gray of Clovis and Merle Slack of Henderson, NV; three grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) Queener, Ty (Lottie) Duncan and Kyle (Taylor) Duncan; twelve great-grandchildren, Kaysen (Landen) Knight, Kaytlyn (Jake) Gerber, Kayden Queener, Jaxon Inge, Jentry Inge, Addie Duncan, August Duncan, Piper Duncan, Dax Duncan, Audrey Jones, Grant Duncan and Katherine Duncan. Sue was also expecting her thirteenth great-grandchild to be born in March. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leland and Zela Garret; a sister, Onita Schillings; and two brothers, Pat Garrett and Curtis Garrett.
