ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— A few whispers of fall can be seen in central New Mexico, but the peak season may depend on where you look.
“It depends on where you’re at in New Mexico,” said meteorologist Clay Anderson with the National Weather Service.
Anderson said elevation play an important role in when leaves change their colors.
Warmer temperatures may lead to muted fall colors in New Mexico
The northern mountains will soon be approaching a peak in color, according to Anderson.
“The northern half of the state should be at peak color change by the middle of October,” said Anderson.
Southern areas will have to wait a little longer.
“During the latter half of October, that’s when the southern half will peak,” said Anderson.
The temperature will also play a role in when the vibrant colors start to peak.
Bitter cold-snaps can lead to brilliant colors.
Judging by the recent warm weather, with no freeze in sight, Anderson said people could see more a more muted color scheme this fall.
“There will be pockets in the mountains that are brilliant, but in general over the northern two-thirds of New Mexico, we’re likely not going to have a brilliant fall color change,” said Anderson.
