Eutona “Sue” Dever Obituary
Funeral services for Sue Dever, 92, of Portales will be held at 2:00 PM, Mon., Jan. 13, 2025 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Kendall Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Kale Hill, Trey Gilliam, Austin Gilliam, Pecos Murdock, Tanner Barron, Kwayde Stevens, Dathan Stroud and Trey Gilliam, Jr. serving as pallbearers. Kyle Knight, Chris James, Marc Lovato and Ramon Carranza will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Eutona Sue Dever, known to virtually everyone as Sue, was born June 22, 1932 in Quanah, TX to the home of Mary Lucille (Beauchamp) and Jesse Hansford McNabb, and died early Thurs. morning, Jan. 9, 2025 at her home in Portales. Sue graduated from high school in Quanah in 1948 at the age of 16, and later that same year on Dec. 15, 1948 she was married to James Douglas Gilliam. The couple had two children together. In 1956, the family moved to Nocona, TX. In 1959, following her divorce from Mr. Gilliam, she and her son and daughter moved to Clovis, NM to live with Sue’s parents. While living there, she met Carl Dever, and the couple was married Nov. 26, 1960. Over the next few years they moved several times before finally settling in Portales in 1967.
Through her working years, she was employed in sales at Harris Store For Men, Hometown Grocery in Portales, and Cribbs Western Wear, and as a secretary at Manasco Construction in Clovis. During her later years, Sue thoroughly enjoyed serving as a Foster Grandmother at Steiner Elementary and later James Elementary Schools in Portales. She was a devout Christian, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portales.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Shearer of Porales, with whom she has made her home for the past four years; her son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Michelle Gilliam of Belton, MO; nine grandchildren, Laura Bouldin, Kale Hill, Angela Pickerd, Amy Stroud, Trey Gilliam, Austin (Kelsey) Gilliam, Pecos Murdock, Kyle Knight, and Chris (Liz) James; 13 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Daren Dever, a grandson, Dustin Shearer, and by her husband, Carl Dever, who died May 20, 2010.
