Ernest Win Askew was born on October 5, 1931, in Tipton, Oklahoma, to the home of Gladys Marie (Gardner) and Dell Robinson Askew, and died on May 21, 2023, in Clovis, New Mexico. Win and his family moved from Oklahoma to Garrison, NM in 1935. Win attended school in Causey, NM and graduated in 1949. In January 1951 he entered active service for The United States Navy where he served as Boatswain on the U.S.S Bodeng Strait Naval Ship until November 1954. Honorably discharged he received the United Nations Service Metal, Korean Service Medal (3 stars) along with a National Defense medal, China Service.
After returning home to Garrison, NM he met and married Margaret Jane Millar. In 1972 he moved his family to Portales NM where he worked as a Carpenter. He was an avid gardener and loved working in his yard. He worked hard to keep up “The Yard of the Month” in Portales. He was a man of little words and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. His favorite saying to all the Powerline Inc. Employees was “The best way to look busy was to walk fast and look worried.” We think that the employees often took his advice. In his later years, he loved going to the Senior dances. He loved dancing with all the nurses at Genesis Healthcare on Norris Street, Clovis NM. We believe they genuinely enjoyed their time with our special daddy.
He is survived by; his son, Van Askew of Portales; three daughters, Exa Kay (Randy) Mitchell of Clovis, NM, Edie Gay (Jason) Renfro also of Clovis, NM and Jan (Blake) Bunch of Decatur, AL; and his pride and joy, seven grandchildren, Blakeley Bunch, Marc (Amanda) Haufmann, Ky (Rebekah) Mitchell, Rhet Roberts and partner (Kevin Pate), Macy (Micah) McCoy, Kanyon Renfro and Dylan Bunch; five great-grandchildren, Zander Fleming, Mila Mitchell, Miles Mitchell, Owen Haufmann and Jade McCoy; a sister Gayle Serpa and husband Joe Serpa of Manteca CA; as well as by a special niece and nephew, Kathleen and Arkie Kiehne of Portales. Win was preceded in death by his parents Dell & Marie Askew; his brother Kelly Askew, and sister Evelyn Kiker; and former wife Jane Millar Scott.
We would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Genesis Healthcare for the care and kindness you gave to our precious Daddy. We would also like to thank the girls at Mamacitas Restaurant for always making him feel special and loved.
