PORTALES, NM — The Lone Star Conference office released its list of weekly top performers on Monday afternoon, the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team (11-8; LSC 7-5) was well represented. After leading the Greyhounds to a crucial pair of Lone Star Conference victories, Daeshi McCants was chosen as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.

McCants is the first Greyhound to garner LSC weekly honors this season. She is no stranger to the award, however, as she was chosen as Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions last season.

Her play led Eastern to road wins over 17th-ranked West Texas A&M and UT Permian Basin. Last Thursday’s win overtime win over the Lady Buffs marked just the third time in program history the Hounds earned a road win in the series.

Her defensive play in the post resulted in 17 defensive rebounds and three blocked shots to limit the opposition to a 39.3 field goal percentage. In ENMU’s rally from a 17-point third-quarter deficit at No. 17 West Texas A&M, McCants had six rebounds and 14 points in 28 minutes along with a steal and block. She scored seven points in the decisive overtime period. Against UT Permian Basin, McCants recorded a double-double with 19 rebounds and 20 points along with two blocks. In the third quarter, McCants and the Hounds limited the Falcons to 20 percent from the floor and three field goals. The 19 rebounds in that game was the most since the 2006-07 season for ENMU. McCants notched her sixth double-double of the season, the third most by a Greyhound since the 2000-01 season.

McCants and the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team will return to Greyhound Arena on Thursday to take on Tarleton State. The contest is sponsored by Combs Properties and will tip off at 5:30 p.m. The theme for the evening will be 90’s Night.
