GREYHOUNDS PUSH PAST RAMS IN TOUGH CONFERENCE BATTLE

Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball never allowed its opponent to lead the entire game and secured an 80-70 victory over (RV) Angelo State Sunday afternoon at Greyhound Arena.

Greg Johnson led all scorers for the second match in-a-row as he connected for 20 points and added three rebounds and two steals.

Tied at four a few minutes into the game, the Hounds broke away with an 11-0 run and kept the momentum high as they led by as many as 21 points in the opening period.

At near ease, Eze Dike (18 pts) and Jahcoree Ealy (15 pts) got into the paint throughout the game. The close chances forced the Rams to begin fouling the relentless guard play and gave the Greyhounds 31 chances at the charity stripe throughout the contest.

“I am really pleased with the way we started the game and the way we finished the game,” said head coach Brent Owen. “Defensively we were exceptional over the first ten minutes of the game. I was really proud of the effort and intensity against really tough, physical team that was sitting at the top of the Lone Star Conference.”

ENMU forced Angelo State to just 25-of-69 (36.2%) from the floor. Four Ram starters scored in double figures – Willie Guy (18 pts), Fredelin De La Cruz (12 pts), Barlow Alleruzzo IV (11 pts), and Kevon Godwin (10 pts).

For the Hounds, Errol White earned his fifth double-double of the season after going for 10 points and 14 rebounds.

“Last game was a really hard game for him and he told me after the game he had a lot of energy for Sunday,” said Owen on White’s feelings after his performance on Friday and thoughts going into Sunday. “He did an incredible job getting to the glass and grabbing rebounds. I think he wanted to make sure he led the team in rebounds tonight.”

The Hounds finished with seven blocks compared to zero from Angelo State. Ealy had a season-best four of those swipes.

The win keeps the program at a perfect 7-0 at Greyhound Arena this season for the first time since 1993-94. That team opened the year with ten straight wins in Portales.

ENMU will be back in action on the road this week with a game against Cameron. Tip is set for Thursday afternoon at 6:30 p.m. MT. The game can be listened to on 105.9 FM KSEL Country or viewed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network.
