PORTALES, NM – The Eastern New Mexico football team picked up its first win of the season with a 42-14 victory over Adams State University on Saturday night.

The Grizzlies struck first to take an early 7-0 lead but the Greyhounds rattled off 21 straight points in the second quarter to gain the 21-7 advantage at the half.

Eastern’s offense continued to dominate in the second half, adding a touchdown in the third quarter and two in the fourth to extend the lead to 42-7. Adams State managed one last touchdown late in the fourth but in the end the Greyhounds came out with the 42-14 win.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The longest pass of the night came when Nathan Valencia connected with Justin Manyweather for a 64-yard touchdown reception.
  • Valencia finished the night 22-27 passing with one interception. He threw for 237 yards and five touchdowns.
  • Manyweather had 110 yards receiving and three touchdowns.
  • Campbell Keithley and Zachery Fields also caught one touchdown each.
  • Currie Thomason rushed for the Greyhound’s first touchdown of the night.
  • Cooper Hamilton went 6-for-6 on extra point kicks.
  • The Greyhounds finished the night with 196 rushing yards, 245 passing yards, and 441 yards of total offense.
  • Camron Pitcher Jr. and Tre Hubert paced the defense with five tackles apiece, while Kendrick Milford picked up four tackles and 1.5 sacks.
  • Paul Smith picked up an interception late in the second quarter.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Tonight’s win was not only the first of the season for the Greyhounds, it was also Tye Hiatt‘s first victory as a head coach.
  • Eastern is unstoppable when limiting opponents to under 20 points. The Hounds now hold a 12-0 record over the competition when keeping them to 20 points or less, dating back to the 2017 season.
  • The Greyhounds finish out a three-game homestand next weekend when they host Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 12 p.m. The contest will also be the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.
