Eastern New Mexico University Postpones Spring Commencement
Eastern New Mexico University has postponed the Spring 2020 Commencement, which was scheduled for Saturday, May 9, due to the continuing global crisis of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, according to ENMU Board of Regents President Terry Othick. Students will still graduate consistent with academic standards, but the actual Commencement Ceremony will not be held as originally scheduled.
“After careful thought and determination, as well as recent guidelines from the state of New Mexico, we have made the decision to postpone our Spring Commencement,” Othick said. “As with all of our difficult decisions recently, the safety, health and well-being of our community and our region continues to be our top priority and guiding principle.
President Jeff Elwell said, “This is our moment to do our part to ‘flatten the curve’ and exemplify leadership and service with the greater good in mind. While this really stings in the moment, I hope all of us will be able to look back on this time and feel immense pride in the role all of us played in safeguarding ourselves, our community and our world.”
Eastern New Mexico University continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing a number of major changes intended to protect the health and well-being of the ENMU community.
All courses are shifting to online instruction following an extended spring break, which will continue until March 23. Direct communication to students supporting this shift is ongoing.
Students are completing the remainder of the spring semester via online instruction from their permanent residences. Only a small number of students who are unable to return home are remaining on campus.
The University is adjusting operations to allow for faculty and staff to work remotely as much as possible.
