Portales, NM – November 8, 2024- ENMU’s Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking is proud to present a theatre performance of “Romeo and Juliet,” a classic tragedy written by William Shakespeare.
Romeo and Juliet, the tragic story of doomed lovers whose stars seem to conspire against them, has been performed on stages worldwide for over 400 years and adapted numerous times for film, musical, and opera venues.
Eastern New Mexico University will bring this classic tragedy about two star-crossed lovers to the main stage at the University Theatre Center, with a twist, bringing the setting to New Mexico. The play will be spoken in the traditional old English in which the play was initially written.
“Shakespeare’s plays continue to be performed because the conflicts feel timeless. We all know what it is to love someone and to hate someone,” said Clara Kundin, Assistant Professor of Theater and the performance director. “By relocating this production from ancient Italy to contemporary New Mexico, I hope that audiences will connect more with the story and its message of unity.”
Romeo and Juliet will host live performances on the main stage at the University Theatre Center (UTC) from Thursday, Nov. 14, to Saturday, Nov. 16, with showtimes at 7:00 p.m. A matinee performance will be on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2:00 p.m. After the matinee on Sunday, ENMU English Professor David Sweeten will lead a talkback on Shakespearean adaptations.
General admission tickets are only $10, while senior citizens and active-duty military tickets are only $7. Tickets can be purchased in advance at enmu.edu/TheatreLive.
