Despite a career afternoon from Iyanna McCurdy, Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball were beaten 71-43 against Texas A&M International University on Friday afternoon at TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building. Eastern move to 4-3 on the season, and 0-1 in Lone Star Conference (LSC) play, the Dustdevils improve to 10-1 on overall and a 1-0 LSC standing.
The game began with the home team jumping out to a 9-2 advantage in the opening stages. A Julia Chavez three and a McCurdy free throw brought the contest to one possession, 9-6 TAMIU. Texas A&M International closed the quarter on a 7-2 streak to hold a 16-8 advantage.
The Dustdevils would assert themselves in the second quarter, stringing together a 17-4 run in the opening five minutes and forty seconds. Eastern could not find an answer as TAMIU continued control the game, closing the quarter 9-4 streak entering the locker room with a 42-16 halftime lead.
ENMU started the quarter with the opening basket from Kamirah Decker, and McCurdy found five points in the first three minutes and twenty seconds of the third frame. However, the Dustdevils kept pace with the scoring, holding a 55-29 led entering the final quarter.
TAMIU pushed its lead to 63-34 to begin the quarter, to hold its largest lead of the night. McCurdy would close the game with the final five points for the Greyhounds, as the Greyhounds fell to Texas A&M International by a final score of 71-43.
NOTABLE STATS
- Eastern posted a field goal percentage of 28.3% (17-60), 16.7% (4-24) from range, and 50.0% (5-10) from the line. Texas A&M International finished the afternoon with a 47.2% (25-53) field goal percentage, 28.6% (4-14) from behind the arc, and 63.0% (17-27) from the charity stripe.
- TAMUI capitalized on turnovers, finding 39 points off turnovers compared to Eastern’s 10 points from turnovers.
- McCurdy led the Hounds on both ends of the floor with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Bella Stone and Chavez both added six points in during the game.
- On the glass, Alexsis Johnson posted eight rebounds in the effort, while McCurdy paced ENMU with three assists, with Natalie Stice finding two blocks.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- McCurdy marked a career best 19 points and 11 rebounds, while recording a career first double-double.
- Stone also found a career best six points, and Johnson gathered a personal high eight rebounds.
- The Dustdevils ended a three-game losing streak against the Hounds, but Eastern still hold the series advantage, 3-2.
