Doug was born October 10th, 1946 in Leadville, Colorado to his father Douglas Monroe Thorn and Velma Newberry. He was a kind big brother to his little sister Mary. Doug spent much of his childhood between Portales, NM and Montana. His daddy worked as a miner and he spent time living with his grandparents, Roy and Maude Newberry, on their farm in Portales, NM. Doug had fond memories of time spent playing games and practical jokes with his aunts and uncles, who he considered more like older brothers and sisters given their proximity in age.
Doug graduated from high school in Philipsburg, MT. After graduation, he worked in a mine before being drafted for military service during the Korean War. After his service he returned to New Mexico and entered college at ENMU.
Over the following years Doug married, traveled, started a family and began a career in construction and fiber optics.
Doug deeply loved his grandchildren. And was known for his kind and fun loving nature with them. He passed away December 16, 2019.
He is remembered with fondness by his family and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at The Church of Christ in Portales, NM on Saturday September 17th at 12:30pm.
