As I have grown into adulthood, I have seen things about the “religious people” of our society, and in a lot of ways, I’m realizing we aren’t so different from those of Jesus’ time.
We seem to always forget that to God, all sins are the same. He doesn’t see your white lie to get out of dinner plans any less offensive than when Ted Bundy killed his last victim. Human nature and societal boundaries may cause us to view those things drastically different, but to God, it’s all one in the same.
Here is the grave reality of what that means:
Jesus died to save you from the office gossip, just like He died to save the souls of the people who break laws every day, or do terribly “immoral” things. You know, the drug addicts, the prostitutes, the gang members, the adulterers, the murderers.
It is so easy for us to judge the sins of others because we minimize our own.
I constantly catch myself making excuses for the small things I do, but am quick to point out when someone else isn’t being very “Christ-like.”
That sentiment seems to be a common trend among Christians. That’s why images like the quote below can be found all over social media.
Regardless of the human opinion of the sins we commit, all sin causes a separation from God. That’s why I say all sin is the same, because regardless of the level of “cultural acceptance” that our sins measure, each one causes a separation between God and us.
The only bridge between the two is Jesus. And when He hung on that cross 2000+ years ago, He didn’t say, “Oh, I’m only sacrificing my life for the little sins.”
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 NLT
This verse in Romans doesn’t say, “the wages of the little white lies” or “the wages of the lunch table gossip.” The verse says, “the wages of SIN is death.”
ALL SIN! Every sin we’ve ever committed.
“He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.”
1 John 2:2 NLT
The sins of ALL the world!
That’s a whole lot of sin…
Think about this.
Let’s say there are 200 members in your church family. Jesus took in the sins of your church, all 200 of you.
But not only did Jesus die for the sins of your church family, He died for every sin of every person to ever walk on this earth! All 8 billion that live on the earth now, and all the people that came before and will come after.
“For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT
We are made right through Jesus, and I don’t know about you, but I would have no hope if I didn’t have that!
So the next time you begin to place sins on a scale of “bad” to “worse,” please consider that to God, it’s all one in the same.
That’s why He continually says to not judge others, especially because their sin is different than yours.
We all fall short of God’s glory. We just fall short in different ways. What it boils down to is that none of us can do this on our own. We need each other to get through this life, because at the end of the day, the only battle we are fighting is the one against Satan, and you better believe he is gonna put up the fight of his life for your soul. Don’t let him win, because God has already claimed it!
