CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball tipped off the WT Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic with a 77-59 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo Friday afternoon.
Two Greyhounds recorded double-doubles while five total ENMU players finished with double-digit scoring figures. Junior Alivia Lewis led the offensive attack with a game-high 18 points and also tallied ten rebounds while senior Jasmine Williams turned in a record-breaking performance and totaled 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Lewis, the Albuquerque, N.M. native, was extremely efficient from the free throw line and went eight of nine from the charity stripe while also showing fantastic vision, leading the squad with four assists. The South Carolina State transfer, Williams is now tied for the fifth spot in the single-game all-time record books after corralling an impressive 17 boards and showed outstanding hustle on the offensive glass totaling eight rebounds on that side of the floor.
Point guard Zamorye Cox finished with ten points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals while sophomores Jena Mehlbrech and Kamira Decker added ten points apiece.
The Hounds jumped out to a four-point lead following the opening tip thanks to a pair of free throws from Lewis and a layup from Williams and were able to push their advantage to six by halftime, leading 29-23 at the halftime buzzer.
The Pack mounted a rally coming out of the locker room and were able to tie the ball game at 39-39 with 4:15 left in the third quarter before the Hounds took over in the final quarter of play.
Eastern caught fire in the last ten minutes of the game and were able to overcome the 27 turnovers they committed with lights-out shooting. The Hounds outscored their opponents 30-14 in the fourth and shot 48 percent from the field while knocking down four of their nine three-point attempts to secure their biggest margin of victory so far this season.
