PORTALES, NM – The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team saw infielders Alex DeLaCruz and Endy Villalona garner First and Second Team All-South Central Region, respectively, as voted on by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
With a 32-18 record, the Greyhounds had the second-most wins and second-highest winning percentage in program history. Additionally, the 22 game turnaround is the second-most in NCAA Division II since 1998.
Alex DeLaCruz turned in a historic season for the Greyhounds to earn a First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region Selection. The second baseman set the program record for runs scored in and finished second in the Lone Star Conference in average, second in on-base percentage, fourth in hits, tenth in doubles, sixth in total bases, and sixth in stolen bases. He has consistently been the best hitter in the Lone Star Conference, leading the league in batting average, runs scored, hits, total bases, slugging percentage, third in doubles, sixth in home runs, sixth in RBI, tenth in walks, 14th fewest strikeouts, third in on-base percentage and second in stolen bases.
Endy Villalona took home the LSC Golden Glove award for the shortstop position with a slick .980 fielding percentage, committing just three errors on the season. Aside from his defense, the Freeport, NY, native was the second-best hitter on the team, hitting at a .383 clip with 39 RBI. Villalona also was a threat on the basepaths, stealing 12 bags in 15 tries, good for a Second Team All-Conference and Secon Team All-Region selection.
With a First Team All-Region selection, DeLaCruz is nominated for the ABCA/Rawlings All-America team.
