PORTALES, NM — The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its 2018 Preseason South Central Region poll at All-Region team this week. The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team was well represented, with second baseman Alex DeLaCruz earning a first team selection.
DeLaCruz turned in a historic season and led the Greyhounds to the second-most wins and second-highest winning percentage in program history. Additionally, the 22 game turnaround was the second-biggest in NCAA Division II since 1998.
His performance earned First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region accolades before garnering All-American status. The second baseman set the program record for runs scored in and finished second in the Lone Star Conference in average, second in on-base percentage, fourth in hits, tenth in doubles, sixth in total bases, and sixth in stolen bases. He has consistently been the best hitter in the Lone Star Conference, leading the league in batting average, runs scored, hits, total bases, slugging percentage, third in doubles, sixth in home runs, sixth in RBI, tenth in walks, 14th fewest strikeouts, third in on-base percentage and second in stolen bases.
The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team will open their 2018 season next Friday at the Dallas Christian Tournament. The season will open against Hannibal LaGrange at 8:30 a.m MT.
