PORTALES, N.M. – Sophomore Zamorye Cox of Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball has been named the GoEasternAthletics.com December Greyhound of the Month.

Cox led the Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball team to a record of 4-1 over the month of December, securing three Lone Star Conference wins along the way. The Portales, N.M. led the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per contest, and recorded 10 or more points in all five contests.

As voted upon by members of the Eastern New Mexico athletic department staff, Cox joins Wyatt Strand and Paul Terry from football, and Desiree Morgas from women’s soccer as Greyhound of the Month Award winners so far this season.

As potent as Cox was on the offensive side of the ball throughout the month of December, her impact on the defensive side of the ball was just as crucial to the Hound’s success. She totaled 19 steals throughout the month, including the second highest game total in program history with seven in a 93-48 win over Northern New Mexico on Dec. 5th.

She followed that record defensive performance against Northern New Mexico with 17 and 22 point scoring outputs on the road against St. Mary’s and St. Edward’s. She combined her 17 points against St. Mary’s with eight rebounds to lead the Hounds to a 64-61 win over the Rattlers.

Cox and the Hounds returned home to Greyhound Arena the following weekend and dominated the competition on their home court, securing big wins over UAFS and Oklahoma Christian to finish off the month with a record of 4-1. Cox totaled 22 points and 10 assists between those two contests along with seven steals.

Eastern New Mexico will hit the road this weekend for road match-ups with Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin before returning home to face defending national champions Lubbock Christian and longtime LSC foe Angelo State on Jan. 16th and Jan. 18th.
