Cox Earns Second Greyhound of the Month Award
Sophomore Zamorye Cox of Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball has been named the March Greyhound of the Month.
As voted upon by members of the Eastern New Mexico athletic department coaches and staff, Cox becomes the first two-time winner of the award after being named the December Greyhound of the Month as well. Cox led Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball to a pair of wins in the Lone Star Conference Tournament and was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 19.7 points and 6.3 assists.
Cox became the first Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball player to be named to the All-Tournament Team since Amy Arp earned the honor back in 1995. The Portales, N.M. native shot 41.2 percent from the field for the tournament and also totaled 10 steals over the course of those three games.
She got her tournament started with 15 points and seven assists in a 70-52 win over Oklahoma Christian as the No. 5 seeded Hounds easily took care of the no. 12 seeded Lady Eagles. Cox then willed the Hounds to the lone upset win of the LSC Tournament with 24 points, seven assists and five steals against no. 4 seeded Tarleton State.
Cox’s performance in that contest led the Hounds to a 66-62 win over Tarleton State and set the stage for a meeting with no. 1 seeded Texas A&M-Commerce. Despite a 68-59 loss at the hands of the Lions, Cox posted her second straight 20-point game and connected on 4-of-9 attempts from three-point range.
Eastern New Mexico was selected into the South Central Regional Tournament for the third time in the last four years as the no. 7 seed. Cox finished the season ranked second in the LSC with an average of 4.7 assists per contest and broke the Eastern New Mexico single season record with 83 steals on the year.
