The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team inked point guard Maurice Coleman on Wednesday in part of National Signing Day. The 6-1 guard joins the Greyhounds after spending this past season at New Mexico Military Institute.
“We’ve been recruiting Maurice all season and one of the blessings of him and who he is, is he’s right here in our backyard,” ENMU Head Coach Tres Segler said. “New Mexico Military Institute is one of the toughest Division I JUCO programs in the country. What makes them special is what makes Mo special. He brings so many intangibles to the table. We got the best of both worlds in the truest since. I have a ton of respect for NMMI’s coaching staff and what they’ve done. I think what drew us to Mo is our bloodlines line up. We want to be known as one of the toughest teams in the country and he’s a ‘plug-and-play’ type player. He’s a guy that will come in and make an impact right away.”
At NMMI, Coleman averaged nearly 10 points/game while shooting 41% from the court and 35% from beyond the arc. The Richmond, Va., native dished out 5.0 assists/game and had at-least five dimes in 15 games last year, including a season-best of 10 on the road at Frank Phillips.
“Mo’s a true floor general,” NMMI Head Coach Ralph Davis said. “He’s one of the better leaders I’ve had in eight years here. He’s a dog on defense and a pass first point guard. He brings a different energy to the program. He’s going to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I think he’ll fit in very nicely in Coach Segler’s new regime. I look forward to watching him play in the LSC.”
Prior to his time with the Broncos, Coleman spent a year at Maryland-Eastern Shore where he saw action in 10 games. At George Wythe High School, the guard lettered in basketball, baseball, cross-country, football and volleyball while winning the state championship during the 2014-15 season. A standout in the classroom, Coleman graduated in the top-10 of his class and involved in honors programs.
“I’m so glad Maurice is signing with Eastern New Mexico University,” Coleman’s father, Antwan, said. “Coach Segler is getting a very hard working young man who is very dedicated and loyal. He’s a team-leader and a playmaker. Maurice works very hard in the classroom and carries himself as a respectable and honorable person on and off the court. We, the Coleman family, are very proud of him.”
The Greyhounds return six players from last season’s 13-15 squad. Head Coach Tres Segler led the Green and Silver to the most Lone Star Conference wins as a first-year head coach during the 2016-17 campaign. Additionally, Segler’s Hounds had the third-most wins under a first-year head coach.
