Clovis, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced that on July 23, 2024, Jesus Carrera, age 35, of Clovis, pled guilty to Aggravated Battery on a Peace Officer and Battery on a Peace Officer and was sentenced to 11 years in the Department of Corrections.
On December 13, 2023, Officer Cope and Smith of the Clovis Police Department responded to a call of a subject with a weapon. Upon arrival at the address several people pointed out Jesus Carrera as the suspect. When the officers went to detain Carrera, he struck Officer Smith in the face and Officer Cope on the right lower chin. He was eventually taken into custody.
On July 23, 2024, Carrera pled guilty to Aggravated Battery on a Police Officer and Battery on a Police Officer. He was also found to be a repeat offender and sentenced to 11 years in the Department of Corrections by the Honorable Fred Van Soelen. At the request of the prosecutor the Aggravated Battery Charge was designated a serious violent offense, and the Defendant will have the serve 85% of that sentence before he is eligible for parole.
The case was prosecuted by Special Prosecutor, Brett Carter, and Carrera was represented by Criminal Defense Attorney, Kaitlyn Cochran of Clovis. The Honorable Judge Fred Van Soelen presided over the hearing.
