Clifferd “Butch” Stevenson Obituary

Clifferd Ray Stevenson, known to family and friends alike as Butch, was born May 3, 1947 in Portales to the home of Vivian Irene “Billie” (Martin) and Clifferd Fletcher Stevenson and died at his home in Roswell on June 25, 2024.  Mr. Stevenson was a 1975 graduate of Portales High School.  While in school, he was active in the AG program, and enjoyed motorcycles and participating in moto cross racing.  Later, he purchased a full sized Honda motorcycle, and he and his sister and brother-in-law traveled together to all of the lower 48 states as well as visiting several provinces of Canada.

For a number of years he was a licensed contractor, and built houses first in Roosevelt county, and later in the Farmington area.  In later years he earned his CDL, and drove freight trucks until his retirement.  Butch was an active member of the Roswell Gun Club where he was part of the leadership.  When there were shooting matches, Butch was in charge of arranging them and overseeing the match.  His hobbies were both shooting and collecting firearms of all sorts.  Although he did not have children of his own, he was very close to his sister’s two children, Shawna and Jason and thought of them as being his.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Charlie Shaw of Breckenridge, TX; a sister-in-law, Joy (Mrs. Ike) Stevenson of Portales; two nieces Sussie of Portales, and Shawna (James) Scott of Hobbs; and three nephews, Joel of Albuquerque, Jim of San Antonio and Jason Shaw of Dallas; and ten great nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother, Thomas O. “Ike” Stevenson.
