After leading the Hounds to a pair of crucial victories over Texas A&M-Kingsville and No. 17 Angelo State last week, senior forward Treyanna Clay was awarded the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
In the two wins, Clay averaged 24.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists, leading the Hounds to a three-way tie at the top of the Lone Star Conference with No. 20 West Texas A&M and the Rambelles.
Against the Javelinas, Clay tied a career-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting and went 4-of-6 from the foul line while recording four boards, three assists and a pair of steals. With the Hounds trailing 12-9 with two minutes to go in the first quarter, Clay tallied seven straight points and a steal, closing out the quarter with a 7-1 run to give the Greyhounds a 17-13 lead heading into the second quarter. Clay scored 12 of her 25 points in the opening period to propel the Greyhounds to an 80-64 win.
In Saturday’s game against the Belles, Clay played a vital role during Eastern’s comeback victory. She scored 10 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter, rallying the Hounds from a 12-point deficit to come away with the 71-67 victory. Clay ripped down 11 rebounds, eight of which on the offensive end, while also matching her season-high steals total with four.
It was the second time Clay had received an LSC Player of the Week award this season, the first time receiving the Defensive Player of the Week Award after getting the nod for Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 21. It was the fourth time this season a Greyhound was the recipient of Defensive Player of the Week, joining Alivia Lewis who is a three-time recipient of the award this season.
Clay played her final game inside Greyhound Arena on Saturday and after getting the win, will be a part of a senior class that led Eastern to its best home record in program history with a 12-1 mark. Clay is also approaching a career milestone as she is just 24 points away from the 1000-point mark in her career.
The Greyhounds will have a challenging week ahead as Eastern will open a four-game road stand to close out the regular season. The Hounds will first travel to Commerce, Texas to take on Texas A&M-Commerce at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday before heading to Stephenville, Texas on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip against Tarleton State.
