We’ve had several questions about this year’s Christmas Light Parade so we wanted to pass along some information about it. We will have an event and we are urging all those who regularly participate to . . . “Not Let the Lights Go Out on Christmas.”
The parade is scheduled for Friday Dec. 4 at 6 p.m., but it has to be changed up during this pandemic year. Since we can’t get a state parade permit, we have decided to do what other communities are calling a reverse parade, in other words the parade stays stationary and the public is invited to drive by to view it. This meets the parameters of a drive-in event as long as we’re employing other COVID safe practices during the evening and the Portales Police Department is in support of this idea.
The lineup will begin at 5 p.m. that Friday near the intersection of Third and Abilene. We’ll line it up much like a homecoming parade with the correct distance between vehicles/entries. It will stretch to the south on Abilene, then around City Park and back past the soccer fields on Chicago to Third if we need that much room.
The crowning of Little Miss Merry Christmas will start things off at 6 p.m. in a Facebook Live event from the parade start. We will still judge the parade with the judges being mobile this year between 6:30 and 7 p.m. The parade will end at 7 p.m.
We hope you’ll join us this year in helping make eyes young and old light up as they view our parade. Please fill out an application and return it to the Chamber by Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. This year we will need to assign spots so please be sure to either turn in the form or call us.

We also have left the sign-ups for Little Miss Merry Christmas open through this Friday. If you have a candidate you will be sponsoring make sure they get an application in by 5 p.m. that day.
