Let Me Be Frank –
26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south[a] to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place.
Acts 8:26
Hope comes from unexpected places.
Marea’s friend gave her a flower bulb with no explanation other than she should plant it. She did, but she doesn’t remember doing that. In fact, she planted it in the rock. Granted, our whole front yard is xeriscaped. No clear markings so no regular watering. Drought tolerant plants are a blessing for us because they can handle the elements.
This is a desert place. I read that passage in Acts and immediately knew what the writer was trying to invoke. Nothing for miles. No visible water. Sand blowing across the landscape because there’s no windbreak in sight. The angel of the Lord told Phillip to head out to the middle of nowhere with no instruction. Hope comes from unexpected places.
A few months after we planted the bulb (we forgot we had planted) a single stem sprouted up. We were amazed… It was beautiful reminder of hope in the desert. I remember deciding to take a picture of it the next day for documentation. After all, what’s another picture when you have over 13,000 in your photo library (it’s a process).
The next day it was trampled. Most likely, someone had walked through the yard on the way to somewhere else and stepped on it. It was pretty fragile; it wouldn’t have taken much. That’s the way it goes, I guess.
God is faithful. When life is hard, He’s still good. When you’re in the desert, He’s there too. He doesn’t abandon you. Hope comes from unexpected places.
This is a pic of our flower today. It’s called a red spider lily. There are more stems, and the blooms are stunning. We didn’t even know they were there… a sweet reminder of His Presence in desert places.
I can’t wait to share more about the story of Phillip and the Ethiopian Eunuch (last weekend in Oct), but for now just know that God is moving in ways you don’t see. As you pray, ask Him for just a glimpse of His glory. It may just come in the form of a beautiful flower or unexpected visit.
Don’t put God in a box of your creation. He’s so much bigger than that. When I think of the Lord in this current season the first idea that comes to mind is “more than able” and that brings me hope.
Hope comes from unexpected places.
Soli Deo Gloria!

1I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
