PORTALES, NM — Honors continue to roll in for the Eastern New Mexico University football team, as the program is off to its best start since the 1998 season. Senior running back was chosen as the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his contributions in the Greyhounds’ victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The selection was the first of the season and fifth in the career for Cass, currently league’s top rusher. The award also gives Eastern an Offensive, Defensive (Brad Hardin, Oct. 2), and Special Teams (Bailey Hale, Sept. 4) Player of the Week for the season. Cass was the last player to earn offensive weekly honors from the conference office, coming on November 14, 2016.
Cass rushed for a season-high 187 yards in the Greyhounds 51-34 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville. His 88-yard sprint on the first of his four touchdowns was a career-long. His four touchdowns also matched a career high. For the game, Cass had five third-down carries, which resulted in five first downs. With one reception and a 20-yard punt return, Cass concluded the night with 224 all-purpose yards.
The 21st-ranked Greyhounds and Cass are off to a 7-1 start and a perfect 4-0 mark at Al Whitehead Field at Greyhound Stadium. Eastern is currently in second place in the LSC standings with a 6-1 record. This week, the Hounds travel to West Virginia, to play West Liberty University on Thursday afternoon.
