Carol Jean Self was born May 28, 1949 in Portales, to the home of W. H. (Hillery) and Peggy Ruth (Pitcock) Morgan and died at her home in Clovis on Sat., Aug. 12, 2017. Carol was born in Portales and lived there until 1958. At that time, the family moved to Floyd to farm until 1962 when they moved back to Portales again. She completed her schooling, graduating from Portales High School in 1967. In 1969, she was married to Ronald Dickson. Together, they established R&D Service Center in Clovis, and Carol acted as bookkeeper. They had two children before divorcing. In Portales on Nov. 23, 1986, she was married to her best friend, Charlie Self. In 1988, they moved to San Antonio where they began a Snap-On Tool business, and again Carol became the bookkeeper. They sold that business and returned to Clovis in 1995 to be near their future grandchildren and worked together to establish C&C Machine. Several years later, Carol also attended Cosmetology College in Clovis.
Carol had a natural ability to organize. She was a hardworking woman, who could work alongside any man. Over the years, she had rebuilt over 2,000 heads for the Cummins Engine Company. Carol wasn’t just a hardworking mechanic and bookkeeper. She was an excellent homemaker and cook, as well as an accomplished seamstress, and in addition kept an immaculate yard. Carol loved the old-fashioned home arts, like canning, quilting and painting. She produced beautiful quilts and paintings. Several of her talents were displayed at the County Fairs.
She wasn’t all work either. She was fiercely devoted to her family, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Carol would get in the pool, and play for hours with them. At the lake, she and Charlie would set up an 18 buoy obstacle course, and Carol would ride the jet ski around and around till it ran out of gas, fill it up, and keep going. She had lots of stamina, and was always ready to have fun. She loved riding the street bike, as well as driving race cars. She and Charlie raced in the same class, and she even beat him once. Carol also loved going to the mountains where she spent hours fishing or riding their 4 wheelers. She loved dancing, and was a wonderful dance partner. Often, when Charlie would come home from work, she would have the music playing in the barn, and they would spend a good portion of the evening just dancing together.
Carol is survived by her husband, Charlie of their home; a son and daughter-in-law, Coby and Lorissa Dickson of Clovis; a daughter and son-in-law, Phobie and Greg Privett of Portales; a step-son, C. D. Self of Clovis; five grandchildren, Jessie Privett, Ryann Privett, Chevy Dickson, Kalyssa Dickson and Josh Self; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Pamela Morgan of Amarillo, TX; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Laveta and Dwight Parker of McAlister, NM and Joy and Coy Wall of Monahans, TX.
