Game Recap: Baseball |  | Cameron Brennan

Eastern New Mexico baseball fell in a pair of games on Monday afternoon against Cameron University, 3-1 and 10-0 (8 Inn.), at McCord Field. The Hounds drop to 2-10 on the season, with a 1-9 record in LSC play. Cameron improve to 6-8, along with a 6-8 standing in conference.

GAME ONE: CU 3, ENMU 1

After a pair of scoreless innings, Cameron jumped on the scoreboard first in the third frame. After a leadoff double from the Aggies, CU capitalized on a fielding error to send the runner home from third. The next batter sent a triple into centerfield, scoring both baserunners giving Cameron a 3-0 advantage after three innings.

The Hounds tried to respond in the top of the fourth inning after a single from Sammy Williamson put a runner on with one out, but the Hounds couldn’t push the runner forward. Eastern found themselves in trouble in the 4th with runners on the corners and one out, but were able to escape after a double play. Dax Edmonds fielded a clean ball and connected with Nyles Duren as he turned the 4-6-3 double play.

Eastern would have to wait until the final inning to get on the board. Jack Thompson worked a walk, then Duren sent a ball to opposite field and stood on third scoring a run 3-1 CU. However, the tying run came to the plate twice but Eastern wasn’t able to score, with a final of 3-1 CU.

FROM THE SOURCE

“Pitchers competed in the zone a lot better today” said Head Baseball Coach Riley Price. “Their hitters took advantage of a few mistakes, but hard to shut an offense down when we don’t compete as an offense and don’t make plays we should make”.

GAME TWO: CU 10, ENMU 0 (8 INN.)

Eastern fell behind the Aggies early, with the home team posting five runs in the 1st inning. CU homered twice in the first frame, and found five runs from four hits in the inning, 5-0 CU.

Cameron slowly added more runs to its tally with a run in the 3rd inning and a run in the 4th inning pushing the score to 7-0 after four. The Eastern bats were cold, as the Hounds were held to just one hit in the remaining four innings.

The Aggies ended the game in the eight innings, scoring three runs. First, a bases loaded double plated two runs pushing the score to 9-0. Then, an error allowed the final runner to cross the plate, ending the game 10-0 CU.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Andres Quintana tallied two hits during the game, while Cooper Hamilton picked up the other base knock.
  • Hamilton picked up two stolen bases during the game.
  • Tommy Perez is dealt the loss after allowing six runs (all earned) from four hits. Dalton Thatcher threw three innings, conceding one run from two hits, while Ruger Bravo dotted 1.2 innings of work with three runs allowed (all unearned) from two hits. Clayton McClean was awarded the win for Cameron going 4.0 innings in relief.

FROM THE SOURCE

“We missed a lot of fastballs today and their pitchers got us chasing off speed all day. We had a few scoring opportunities, but bas running errors and lack of timely hits crushed any chance of momentum to build” said Price. “I did not recognize our hitters today and hope we can turn it around as a group going into next weekend”.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Cameron hold the all-time series record 40-66 over the Hounds, taking the season sweep.
  • Hamilton swiped two bases in a single game for the first time in his career.
  • The Hounds look to bounce back at Greyhounds Baseball Field this coming Friday against UT Permian Basin. ENMU is scheduled for a four game series against the Falcons, with game one slated to start at 4 pm on Friday.
